Why?

Simply because they are long range (so an object could be sitting 20km away), they require low power to connect (objects can last 10 years on very small batteries) and cost of connection is very low (as low as $2/year/device).

However they are limited in terms of size of messages you can send. Clearly they are not made for sending audio & video files.
